Sons of Cuba
By Mike Ashworth | April 8, 2010
Last night I took the opportunity to take a trip to the ICA in London with my friend Dana, to watch a film titled “Sons of Cuba”.
It is a documentary by Andrew Lang about how Cuba trains its young boxers. A nation that has achieved great results in all boxing competition thanks to a pyramidal scheme that selects the best talents.
The film follows the lives of a group of young boys as they train and prepare themselves for the Cuban national boxing championships. This competition is important as future Olympic contestants have emerged following wins at the Nationals.
Many of those in the film have little in the way of material wealth, when compared to us, yet they don’t aspire to this way of life. They aspire to represent the Country they love with all their hearts, to be the man of the family, to achieve wonderful things so that they may be able to help their parents when they are older.
I feel that many people view Cuba as some kind of third world country that must be transformed immediately to the kind of society we have. For sure, there are some things they could do with having improved however I am of the opinion that many of us, in the so called “developed world”, could learn a lot about how to lead better lives from this group of kids.
The film is both inspiring and moving, I suggest that if you get a chance to watch it somewhere you don’t hesitate.
