Self myofascial release
By Mike Ashworth | April 9, 2010
I learnt about the importance of stretching a long time ago, be that post workout or a daily routine (in my case helping to keep my back nice and flexible and free from pain).
About a year ago I discovered self myofascial release. The “fascia” is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body, including muscle. This soft tissue can become restricted often resulting in pain, muscle tension etc.
It is very easy to carry out this release by yourself, all that is required is a foam roller, or to be more specific a dense cylindrical foam roller. Go for one that is about three feet wide and six inches around (approx 90 cm x 15cm). Here are a couple of links to those that will work very well. You should also be able to find one in any shops that sell sports equipment or yoga / pilates gear.

Below you will find a selection of videos from youtube showing how to use the roller for self myofascial release on various parts of the body.
It’s like having your very own deep tissue masseur on call 24/7.
