I heard a story that the adhesive was actually one that was deemed to have failed in other tests. 3M did not know how/where it could be used unil the Post-It idea was derived.

i heard the same thing clive, apparently the glue just wasnt sticky enough for sticking things permanently then someone thought of the post-it
