Art in the rice fields of Japan

By Mike Ashworth | February 2, 2010

This is both amazing and beautiful.

Stunning crop art sprung up across rice fields in Japan. But this was no alien creation - the designs had been cleverly planted.

Farmers created the huge displays without using ink or dye.

Instead, different colours of rice plants had been precisely and strategically arranged and grown in the paddy fields.

As summer progressed and the plants shoot up, the detailed artwork begins to emerge.

Here is a time lapse video of rice paddy art as it happens.
