living in fear of terrorism

By Mike Ashworth | January 1, 2010

I sometimes wonder who is to blame for the fear that many have about terrorism.

Whether it is the acts of terror themselves or the subsequent reporting by the media which leads many to believe that you cant go about your business without someone wanting to kill you.

The problem with the news is it takes those rare and infrequent events and makes you think they are more common and more frequent then they are and the language used also adds to the fear generated.

I recall that during the height of the IRA bombings in the UK many years ago that the reporting was different (perhaps 24/7 news should shoulder some responsibility) and that perhaps people did not feel as fearful.

There are more good things that happen in the world every day than bad, you just never get to hear about the majority of them.

Perspective is always a good thing.
