Stop Smoking
By Mike Ashworth | December 30, 2009
A few years ago I gave up smoking. I acted because I had seen the effect of smoking on my mum, who has emphysema, a long-term, progressive disease of the lung. In addition it was also the advert on TV which showed the veins and arteries of someone oozing out allsorts of gunk.
Those two things were enough to make me stop however it wasnt easy. You need all the help you can get if you’re going to make this work.
I opted for a NHS observed stop smoking plan. Patches were dispensed on the NHS with a prescription and a check-in with nurse at GP’s surgery ensured I was staying on track.
If you are thinking of giving up as a New Year resolution then I urge you to check out the NHS website.
The website has some excellent information and also lists the various methods available and advises which may suit you best.
You can also request a free ‘Quitkit’ or call 0800 0 665 826 and request one.
Something that will also benefit you if you are wanting to stop is the following.
You will always be more successful if you think in terms of something you are getting (a positive) rather than something you are giving up (a negative).
One example would be telling yourself or others that you stopped or given up smoking. Instead, say you are becoming more fit and healthy.
Banning yourself from seeing friends because they smoke is also not going to help. The reason for this is that you are getting a gain in one area of your life (becoming more healthy) however this is accompanied by a loss in another area (less time with friends). It wont be easy however you need to ensure that this does not occur.
Also a health reason far outweighs a “i’m giving up to save money” reason. Sure, you’ll save money however this is a by-product of stopping smoking.
These might seem insignificant however you need all the help you can get and any tip / trick that helps has got to be worth a shot.
If you live in the Brighton and Hove area and are open-minded enough to realise that hypnotherapy is a lot more than “3,2,1, back in the room….” I am happy to recommend the following person to you.
Andy Lucas is a Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner. He is fantastic and has helped many people stop smoking. You can contact him via his website SpringtoMind.
