From big mick to fit mick: alcohol
By Mike Ashworth | October 15, 2009
I was rummaging around on my computer earlier and I found a document where I’d been tracking some previous failed attempt at getting my fitness levels up a couple of years ago.
What I found most astonishing is the amount of alcohol I was consuming.
This particular week that I’d tracked, not sure if it was as per other weeks, gives some insight into how much I was drinking, how little I cared about my own body and clearly how little I wanted a real change in fitness at that time.
Tuesday - 3 pints
Wednesday - 6 pints
Thursday - 4 pints
Friday - 8 pints
Saturday - 2 pints
Sunday - 6 pints
When I look at these numbers now it is with amazement at how much alcohol I was consuming. Shocking. No wonder I became as unfit as I was.
In fact I recall one day / evening when I had consumed so much drink that I don’t remember leaving the pub (I was subsequently told that I’d left via the fire escape!) and then found myself sprawled across a pavement later that night with no recollection of how long i’d been unconscious for or anything. I was off work with concussion for a while. The wake up calls were there and I just ignored them.
I’ve been keeping a record of food/drink etc consumed, for my trainer, Christian Vila, as part of my “end of big mick” quest.
Initially I thought I was being very good, keeping the intake of alcohol down to a minimum for me. Imagine my shock when I had the first week reviewed by Christian.
Monday - glass of champagne at home in the evening. It was offered, I accepted.
Wednesday - few bottles of peroni with a meal out.
Thursday - couple of pints.
Friday and Saturday. I went up to London, and for me this was taking it easy. Probably about 5 pints each evening, maybe a couple of G&T’s, couple of shots.
I thought I’d done well at keeping the intake down however Christian asked “How much do you really want this?” referring to the change in my fitness that is happening now.
I replied “more than anything in the world”. “In that case” he said “you’ve got to get a handle on the drink”.
Some of the days may only have been a glass or two however it was the fact that drink was so pervasive in my life, almost every day some was consumed. And it didn’t have to be.
Things couldnt be more different now. Rarely do I have a drink, except perhaps as a treat (it was my niece’s birthday last weekend so I had a few pints at her party). I’ve removed the daily alcohol which was so prevalent in my life at that time.
