The language of size
By Mike Ashworth | September 29, 2009
One of the interesting things I discovered at Charter Medical Centre is how they are advised not to use certain language when talking about how overweight people are.
They are told that they must not upset the person by talking about them being fat. Instead they are to use terms such as overweight or obese.
They must also not upset people whose weight is such that it will have an impact on their life expectancy. I told her I wanted to hear it how it was, no messing, it’s the only way really.
I think that people sometimes need to be shocked into dealing with a problem or else they will do nothing about it, and that is much worse.
