The begining of the end of “Big Mick”
By Mike Ashworth | September 27, 2009
Yes, that’s correct it’s the beginning of the end for “Big Mick” as I’m affectionately known. Given this name for two reasons, one to separate me from the other Mick (Little Mick as it happens) and also because, lets face it, I’m a bit of a big lad!
Earlier this year I received a letter from my Doctor saying, now that you’re over 40, blah blah, makes sense to keep on top of your health, blah blah, come down to the medical centre for a free chat. I pretty much knew that some changes needed to be made however I didn’t realise how severe the diagnosis would be.
Well to cut a long story short I’m overweight, but that doesn’t sound too bad does it I hear you say. Well how about obese, yep that sounds a bit worse yeah? How about morbidly obese? Yep, that’ll do the trick. Or to put this another way, my body weight will have a detrimental impact on my life expectancy.
I knew of course that I was overweight, a look in the mirror is only required for me to reach that conclusion, however to have the facts laid out in front of me in such a stark way was shocking, and just what I needed to make me sit up and take note.
No point blaming anyone else I thought, I was responsible for this happening. Talk of being big boned or it’s all in the genes, is just that, talk.
I became the weight I am because I ate and drank too much and exercised too little. Nobody made me do these things I did them of my own volition. And now I’m going to change all that.
I am fortunate that beneath this squidgy exterior is a fit guy waiting to emerge. I’ve had all manner of tests done and am fortunate to not be at risk of Diabetes and my cholesterol levels are pretty good. In addition I’ve already reduced me resting pulse rate and blood pressure, both of which weren’t too bad to start with. They now correspond with the measurements of someone who is a fit and active person a few years younger than myself, which is very encouraging.
This is my focus at the moment above all others because, my life, quite literally, depends upon it.
Perhaps at some point in the future I’ll be known as “Medium Sized Mick” or perhaps even “Fit Mick”.
In further posts you’ll discover my goals in relation to my size, weight and health and updates on my progress.
