Streetsmart Brighton and Hove commences 1st November 2008
By Mike Ashworth | May 3, 2009
I am pleased once again to be helping Alison Ali with StreetSmart in Brighton and Hove for 2008. I have set up and will be administering the facebook group in support of this scheme.
StreetSmart Brighton and Hove Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=48660686624
StreetSmart raises £1000’s for local charities in our city every year via an innovative scheme involving local restaurants. See the list of those participating further down this post, where you can eat well and help others at the same time.
We focus on invisible issues - such as women and children who are fleeing domestic violence - as well as the dispossessed and marginalised that we see all too often on our streets.
The beauty of StreetSmart is its simplicity. It is an innovative, easy fundraising scheme.
At participating restaurants, a voluntary £1 is added to the table bill at the end of the meal during the months of November and December.
At the end of each month, the restaurant passes on the total money raised to StreetSmart. We then use all of those £1s to support reputable and carefully vetted charities in the Brighton and Hove area.
Because the sponsors - Deutsche Bank - cover all administrative costs, every penny in every £1 raised goes directly to the people who need it. Not many charitable campaigns can make this claim.
In the seven years that StreetSmart has been running in Brighton and Hove, the scheme has raised almost £75,000. In 2007 we raised a total of £13,000. This sum helped to fund vital city projects (you can view a list of the Organisations that benefitted further down)
It would be wonderful if this year the total collected could top £13,000.
Here is the list of the participating restaurants for 2008 (more to be added)…
