Brighton Fringe Festival comes to Hove

By Mike Ashworth | May 3, 2009

I am pleased to announce that for the month of May 2009, St Andrews Church in Hove will be taken over by Fletch Productions, offering established and new producers an opportunity to be involved in an organic/grass roots fringe project and introducing audiences to a stunning new venue.

The goal is to encourage participation in Fringe by offering fair deals to producers with no hidden costs or scary small print. They will not charge you a ‘guarantee fee’ for use of the space, instead they will be offering incentive packages to encourage producers to actively promote their shows (i.e. they will give you an additional % of ticket sales if your show sells a certain number of tickets across the run).

They are actively encouraging new producers to shout up if they need advice or assistance on producing for Fringe – the team can offer guidance from booking stages through to curtain call and they are working towards running free workshops/master classes at the venue throughout May.

The maximum capacity is 320 however the space also works wonderfully with smaller audiences (50 plus) as the church has a genuinely intimate feel.

They will be offering 4 free slots to local community groups, youth groups, charities & schools to encourage activity from arts organisations or individuals who wouldn’t normally participate in Fringe due to financial restrictions. They are inviting proposals now and the deadline is 23rd January. Whoever is selected will be given assistance/guidance for all aspects of their show, from artwork for Fringe & Fletch brochures, marketing, promotional materials, through to stage management, direction and how to attract press. The winning groups will then walk away with 100% profit from their ticket sales and a bespoke package of advice on production, arts management and sustainability from the Fletch team.

The venue is available for workshops during the week from 10am until 4pm. They are actively encouraging producers and groups to get in touch if they would like to run a workshop and/or networking events free of charge (and non-ticketed) in the space during these times.

They are looking to programme a number of mentoring workshops where established producers, directors, venue managers, publicists and performers can offer advice and guidance to new talent to encourage growth and sustainability. If you would like to get involved in any of the workshops please get in touch, they’d love to hear from you!

With an excellent team on board, including Emily Hahn, formally of The Roundhouse and Emily Dubberley, Marketing and PR Guru, the project is set to be an exciting and innovative new venture for Brighton Fringe.

Please submit your proposals by the end of January, for more info go to:
